Key Public Issues Facing Bullhead City
Bridge
What are the goals we are looking to accomplish by building of a new bridge? This has never really been explained to me, but here are some reasons that have been mentioned.
Alleviate traffic on HWY 95
1. Why do local businesses want to alleviate traffic?
2. A bridge at Riverview moves the traffic congestion from the Laughlin Bridge & 95 to the center of Bullhead City. A recent Letter to the Editor asks how would you like Semi-Trucks along HWY 95 when an accident closes the Laughlin Bridge? What a nightmare!
3. A bridge at the Crossroads removes the congestion completely and brings business to the big box stores who generate the most in Sales Tax that goes back to the city.
4. Smaller businesses on HWY are unique and most are not in competition with the larger stores. Provide excellent customer service and you maintain or increase your customer base.
5. Who at Riverview wants the bridge?
a. Riverfront home owners who will increase the value of their
property.
b. Businesses that do not live in Riverview.
c. Casinos
Provide a second crossing point in the event the Laughlin Bridge is closed due to emergency.
1. By the time the second bridge is built the dam bypass will be complete, and most truck traffic will be gone.
2. Emergencies do not happen every day. The Avi Bridge is an emergency route even if it is not convenient.
Are we building a bridge for today, or for the future of Bullhead City when the next economic boom will have population extended to the Crossroads?
NOTES:
The latest question is how many piers are needed for the proposed locations?
The Crossroads could be a moot point if someone would provide the distance from Bridge Crossroads to the Casinos, and the distance from Bridge Riverview to the Casinos.
What is the impact of the proposed locations in regards to Emergency Evacuation?
A second bridge so we can reach gambling easier?
This Bridge issue would be better left to the voting public. The City Council will only be asked to issue a Resolution of Support. They will not determine where the bridge is going. That decision on the recommended site will come from ADOT, NDOT, and the Feds.
My bridge concerns are for what is in the best interest of Bullhead City. We should be building for the future. I have no vested interest as my primary bridge of choice will always be the Laughlin Bridge.
Building Heights
I do not favor an increase in building heights along the Colorado River. New buildings that are located on the Parkway and do not block our special eye pleasing river/casino views are encouraged. Keep in mind that developers and special interests groups are those who would like to take our view.
Property Tax Increase
NEVER! They haven’t got Property Taxes right yet………
Sales Tax
This is not the time for a Sales Tax increase! When the economy turns then this should be revisited. The Sales Tax for Bullhead City has not been increased in twenty years. Paying an extra fifty cents per one hundred dollars spent would help to provide the services and amenities we all could enjoy.
Impact Fees
They are a tax, but who is being taxed; the Construction companies, or the new home buyer, or both? I am not a specialist in this area, but a Committee made up of Contractors, City Department Heads, and other interested parties should be able to reach a sensible solution that all can agree upon. Infrastructure is not FREE!
